Gulf Coast Ride Of Silence 2020

As you can imagine the Ride of Silence will be a little different this year. After a request from the Ride of Silence organizers the SMBC board has decided to support this important cause and take the day to remember those bicyclists who have been killed and injured by motor vehicles while riding.

On May 20 we ask SMBC members to ride solo or with household members and take a few minutes to reflect and remember those who have lost their lives while bicycling.

We invite members of all Southwest Florida bicycling clubs and organizations to join us in the ride.

Ride of Silence organizers are working on plans to allow participants to easily report these rides and link them together through an easy-to-use platform. SMBC will pass along further details when we receive them. Obviously, these rides should be held in accordance to rules and guidelines set by local and state authorities.

Here is the latest information from the Ride of Silence National Board

Dear organizers,

The Board met last evening and made a few more decisions to help give you some guidelines for this unusual year for us all.
  • Encourage your event participants to ride solo, with their family or same household members or "virtually" (on a trainer).  FYI: We've actually had an event in the Palmer Station in the Antarctica for years doing their event on stationary bike trainers for their event every year, so it's not unheard of.
  • Remind your participants of these simple rules in your communications:
    1.  Ride in silence
    2. Remember and honor those who've been hit & killed while riding or seriously injured
    3.  Ride slowly and a relatively short distance - this is not a race
    4.  Wear a helmet & obey road laws for bicyclists
  • Take a selfie photo or 2 and use the hashtag #RideofSilence2020 and location of the event when posting their rides on social media.  Posting to our Facebook page should be especially encouraged:  https://www.facebook.com/rideofsilence/
This will allow us to get a good sense for how many people participated this year, & will be something the media may also use for researching their stories about our events around the world.

    **Additional ideas for documenting/ reporting:
Some organizers are encouraging their participants to visit a ghost bike in their area (if there is one) and take their photo with it as a gesture of honoring the deceased person.  If the name of the deceased is known and can be included in the social media post or report with the RoS that would help to personalize it.  Some organizers are placing a ghost bike at their city/ township hall or state capitol to draw attention to the event with their local politicians/ legislators and media.  Participants can then visit this ghost bike one by one at a safe distance to show their respects.

  • Submit reports, photos, links to stories, etc. to our website post-event form:
http://www.rideofsilence.org/reports/  (this form will be activated in time for the event)

  • In consideration of the safety and security of individuals and small groups of riders who may not feel comfortable riding in the evening on a weekday feel free to encourage your participants to ride on the following Saturday, May 23, at 10 am, which is also the official rain date and date/time for S. Hemisphere events.

Ride safe & strong,

The Ride of Silence Board
